G1 HISTORY

Many millions of years ago, semi-organic beings known as the Quintessons constructed a metallic planet around an organic core and called the planet Cybertron. Cybertron was designed as a factory for manufacturing two types of large, mindless robots: military hardware and consumer goods. Originally, the Quintessons had attempted to manufacture creatures they referred to as the TransOrganics, mechanical-organic hybrids like themselves. These creatures were uncontrollable, however, and had to be imprisoned in the core of Cybertron. The Quintessons sold these two types of robots to other residents of the galaxy for a profit. They equipped Cybertron with several fail-safe devices to ensure that these robots would never revolt against their super-intelligent but physically frail masters. They constructed the Plasma Energy Chamber, which would release incredible amounts of plasma energy (lethal to mechanical beings) throughout Cybertron. They also constructed an emergency switch that would freeze the internal workings of all their creations if activated. Finally, the Quintessons created the super-computer Vector Sigma, programmed with the capability to give robots life. Using Vector Sigma, the Quintessons began to program robots with the intelligence necessary to manufacture themselves. While this sped up manufacturing, it had the unexpected side effect of producing robots who had developed emotions, personalities and real feelings.

Tired of the dictatorial Quintesson rule, the consumer goods, possibly in collaboration with the military hardware and led by a rebel known as A3, launched a massive revolt against the Quintessons and drove them from the planet, leaving the robots themselves in control of Cybertron. For a time, the robots lived together in peace and harmony, but eventually the military hardware, which came to be known as Decepticons, grew tired of sharing the planet and yearned for conquest and control of their peaceful consumer goods brethren, known by now as Autobots. Not designed to combat the Decepticons, the Autobots turned to stealth and invented the art of transforming into Cybertronic cars and transport vehicles. Led by a new super-robot known as Megatron, the Decepticons, who by now were able to fly, began to systematically conquer the planet. The Autobots’ chances were dwindling until the aging A3 created the only robot equal to Megatron, the massive Optimus Prime. Led by these two, the Autobots and Decepticons battled evenly for millions of years, draining Cybertron of its once-rich sources of energy. Four million years ago, Prime and a select team of 17 Autobots left Cybertron in search of new sources of energy. They were followed by Megatron and his own force of Decepticons. After a battle in space, the two factions crash-landed on the organic planet Earth in a volcano in northwestern Oregon (U.S.). They remained in stasis until 1984, when a volcanic eruption activated the Autobot ship’s repair bay. Unfortunately, the first robot selected for repair was the Decepticon Skywarp. The Decepticons repaired themselves and began to systematically pillage the planet Earth for its many resources. The Decepticon Starscream unwittingly awakened the Autobot ship again, however, and the Autobots were then systematically repaired.

By the year 2005, the Decepticons had gained control of Cybertron. In that year, the gigantic planet-eating machine known as Unicron appeared in the world of the Transformers. In a battle just before Unicron’s appearance, Optimus Prime was killed and passed the Autobot Matrix of Leadership to his subordinate Ultra Magnus. Megatron was also injured badly and was hurled into space by Starscream - he was happened upon by Unicron and was reformatted into Galvatron. Unicron sent Galvatron to destroy the Matrix, as it is the only power capable of destroying Unicron. Galvatron killed Ultra Magnus and seized the Matrix, then tried to use it to subdue Unicron. Angered, Unicron began to destroy Cybertron until the Autobot Hot Rod seized the Matrix, opened it to destroy Unicron, and became the new Autobot leader Rodimus Prime, conquering Cybertron in the process.

In 2006, the hate plague was spread unwittingly by a few human scientists and infected every being in the galaxy except for the resurrected Optimus Prime, who was able to retrieve the Matrix from Rodimus Prime, open it, and destroy the plague. In 2007, the Decepticons constructed gigantic rocket boosters and pushed Cybertron into Earth’s orbit, then opened the Plasma Energy Chamber. Just as the Autobots on Cybertron were dying, Spike Witwicky reversed the boosters and drove the released energy into Vector Sigma. In doing so, he resurrected the Autobots and surged Cybertron full of energy, bringing it into a new golden age. As a result of the plasma energy, the Decepticons (inside their new super-creation Scorponok) were hurled uncontrollably through space, leaving the Autobots in control of Cybertron.
